  2. Course Change Proposals:

All course change proposals were approved without opposition. The approved courses are listed on the CIM Course Report created by CourseLeaf and will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:
    • Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for December 8, 2021
    • Graduate Council meeting scheduled for December 16, 2021

  3. Old Business:
  4. New Business:
Except for items 4b and 4c which were tabled to December, the following program change proposals were approved on the CIM Program Report without opposition. The program changes will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:

    • Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for December 8, 2021
    • Graduate Council meeting scheduled for December 16, 2021

    1. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Human Environmental Sciences – BRKDBS – Birth through Kindergarten, Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Science presented by Laura Herold.

HDFS 2493 Introduction to Cultural Competence added.

HDFS 2493 Introduction to Cultural Competence will support students in supporting all children and families in their work as teachers and meet program needs for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

      HDFS 4342 Curriculum and Assessment 3-K and HDFS 4342L Curriculum and Assessment 3-K Lab removed;
HDFS 4332 Curriculum and Assessment 0-3 and HDFS 4332L Curriculum and Assessment 0-3 lab removed.

HDFS 4213/HDFS 4212L Math and Science for Young Children and HDFS 4223/HDFS 4222L Creative and Social Experience for Young Children added in their place.

HDFS 4233 Developmental Assessment in Early Childhood added.

HDFS 4342 Curriculum and Assessment 3-K and HDFS 4342L Curriculum and Assessment 3-K lab and HDFS 4332 Curriculum and Assessment 0-3 and HDFS 4332L Curriculum and Assessment 0-3 lab will be replaced by HDFS 4213/HDFS 4212L Math and Science for Young Children and lab and HDFS 4223/HDFS 4222L Creative and Social Experiences for Young Children and lab. A new course, HDFS 4233 Developmental Assessment in Early Childhood, will be added. With these changes, faculty are responding to student feedback, findings from program assessment review, and their own identification of several issues. These include lack of time devoted to the vital core content in HDFS 4332/lab and 4342/lab; the need for additional focused instruction on developmental assessment; student need for clarity of instruction in math and science and creative experience, to match the existing course focused on language and literacy (HDFS 3333). By creating topic-specific courses, increasing time to three credits for each course, and pulling out assessment into a distinct 3 credit course, we will meet student needs and resolve these issues.

HDFS 4763 Research in HDFS: Methodological Approaches, HDFS 4773 Research in HDFS: Statistical Approaches (Or STAT 2303) removed.

Faculty will make room for these improvements and also respond to student feedback and program assessment data by removing HDFS 4763 Research in HDFS: Methodological Approaches and HDFS 4773 Statistical Approaches (Or STAT 2303) from the requirements. The B-K program is the only licensure program on campus to currently require methods and statistics, and a review of other B-K licensure programs revealed none that required these courses. Faculty worked with the instructor of HDFS 4763 to ensure that core knowledge of reading and interpreting research are embedded in core B-K courses.

CIED 3103 Children and Adolescent Literature removed.

CIED 3103 is being removed because it focuses almost entirely on literature for grades 1-12, while the B-K program licenses teachers to teach through kindergarten. In addition, HDFS 3333 covers the selection of and presentation of literature for children ages 0-kindergarten. Thus, it is not in the best interest of students to require CIED 3103.

Title of Field Experience courses (HDFS 4373 and HDFS 4383) changed to Internship: Infant, Toddler, and Preschool Programs and Internship: Kindergarten Programs.

The title of HDFS 4373 Field Experience I and HDFS 4383 Field Experience II will be changed to Internship: Infant, Toddler, and Preschool Programs and Internship: Kindergarten Programs. This will align with terms used by other licensure programs on campus and also increase clarity for students on the placements for both courses.

One credit added to general electives to meet 120 requirement after proposed program changes.

Edits made to the fine print about licensure requirements to bring that information up to date.

Finally, the fine print on licensure requirements will be updated to reflect university wide removal of the Praxis 1 requirements and state changes to the Praxis 2 requirements for the B-K license (4a_brkdbs_report_11192021, 4a_brkdbs_correspondence_re_cied_3103_11192021, 4a_brkdbs_revising_an_approved_licensure_program_section_c_11192021, 4a_brkdbs_revising_an_approved_licensure_program_appendices_11192021, 4a_brkdbs_cip_code_change_to_131210_11192021).

    11. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction – DREDBA – Drama Education presented by Freddie Bowles.

The University of Arkansas offers five other cognate licensure programs in the Bachelor of Arts in Teaching: English, French, German, Spanish, and Social Studies. Students will complete 40 hours of pedagogy including 8 credit hours of field experiences (practicum and internship), 45 hours in the content area, 35 hours of UA Core, to complete 120 credit hours. The program of study is designed to include a humanities major as well as the pedagogical component. This design allows students to earn a BA in their content area if they choose, and it also allows for two post-baccalaureate routes: Master of Arts (MA) or Master of Education (MEd).

Before the BAT degree was designed, theater majors had to continue their education at the masters level to earn an MAT in Drama Education. At that time, their methods class was combined with the English methods class. It was also an intensive and expensive route. As interest grew in becoming a teacher, the theater department approached faculty in CIED about creating a four-year licensure program for their students. They are also experiencing an increase in the number of students who wish to be teachers. Currently five students have expressed interest, and faculty in theater are actively recruiting more students in hopes of providing our state and beyond with qualified experts in teaching drama (4k_dredba_report_11192021, 4k_dredba_new_educator_licensure_ltrofintent_11192021, 4k_dredba_new_educator_licensure_section_a_11192021).

    12. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction – EDSTBS – Educational Studies, Bachelor of Science in Education presented by Rhett Hutchins.

Provide course offerings via online delivery to match the Arkansas Department of Educations Grow-Your-Own model of teacher development without requiring working teaching paraprofessionals to leave their current job and communities to finish a bachelor's degree in education.

The EDST program was approached by the Arkansas Department of Elementary & Secondary Education based on producing previous high quality graduates that had completed DESE approved alternative licensure programs. By providing EDST course via online delivery, EDST program enrollment will become more secure and also establish a footprint in working with active para-professionals in school districts throughout the State of Arkansas (4l_edstbs_report_11192021, 4l_edstbs_curriculum_revision_and_distance_delivery_ltrofnotification_11192021, 4l_edstbs_curriculum_revision_and_distance_delivery_curriculum_11192021, 4l_edstbs_curriculum_revison_and_distance_delivery_ltrofsupport_11192021, 4l_edstbs_curriculum_revison_and_distance_delivery_ltrofendorsement_11192021).
