In addition, several of the courses currently required for the major are no longer taught or no longer taught on a regular basis. The AAST Program proposes several changes to the major that will require students to: 1. Complete 21 hours of credit (an increase from the current 18); 2. Complete one of two introductory courses offered by Program faculty; 3. Complete one of three courses in African or African American History; 4. Complete the remaining required hours (15 hours) from the complete list of courses that program faculty offer with at least six hours being at the 4000-level or above . No more than nine of the fifteen hours can come from any one department. The proposal also changes introductory language to the major. The proposal was approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November Faculty Senate meeting.
    4. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Arts and Sciences Dean – AMSTBA – BA, American Studies (Table One, Attachment 1D) was presented by Donna Draper. The proposal requested to change the language of section 'D' to better indicate that students may work with the chair of studies to identify an area of study and pick classes to fulfill that study area. Instead of saying "Select three of the following in the chosen area of study," we propose that the language should read, "Select three courses in one of the following areas of study or another area of study as approved by the chair of studies". The proposal was approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November Faculty Senate meeting.

The Graduate Certificate in Technical Writing and Public Rhetorics originated with a request by the Graduate School that the English Department create a graduate certificate program in professional writing to serve the Northwest Arkansas area. The Northwest Arkansas area has a wide array of small and large businesses, non-profits, and community organizations that do a great deal of writing, but currently have no pathway to let employees professionalize writing skills through the university. The program in Technical Writing and Public Rhetorics seeks to offer professionals a way to increase their skill and knowledge of writing in the professional and public sphere, and also offer individuals looking to enter the professional or public workplace as a writing specialist an avenue to prepare for the field. At the same time, the certificate offers graduate students already studying at the university the opportunity to increase their writing skills and better prepare themselves for careers outside of academia. The certificate program has generated excitement among a variety of intramural audiences including the Walton College, the College of Engineering, the Department of Journalism, Information Technology Services, and the Global Campus, with many of the aforementioned programs expressing their intention to direct students to at least some if not all of the courses we plan to offer.
