    1. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of English – ENGLBA – English, Bachelor of Arts presented by William Quinn.

Adding online/web-based delivery to program delivery.

To increase the number of English majors by making courses taught by UA faculty far more accessible.

Added ENGL 3103 as a major requirement and reduced the concentration hours from 21 to 18 to keep the total number of ENGL hours the same at 54.

Requiring ENGL 3103 allows the major to satisfy General Education Outcomes 1.2, 5.1, and 6.1

    2. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of English – ENGLBA-CRWR – English: Creative Writing presented by William Quinn.

Adding online/web-based delivery to program delivery.

The English B.A. program is designed for students to acquire both general and specialized knowledge required for the advanced study of English literature. In addition to developing research and pedagogical skills in preparation for careers in academia, the English major provides one of the very best preparations for a number of ALTAC (“alternative to academic”) careers, including legal, governmental, journalist, advertising and marketing careers, indeed all professions that require both critical thinking and writing expertise. In order to serve a more inclusive student body, our recently redesigned English major at UAF offers the option of three different, though complementary concentrations: a traditional concentration on literary analysis and interpretation but more focused on a variety of particular topics, a concentration on Rhetoric and Writing, and a concentration on Creative Writing. Offering these same concentrations on-line would greatly assist students to complete their degree requirements in a timely fashion. We also anticipate that offering the UAF English major on-line would greatly increase the number of students both within and without the state who are eager and will now be able to earn a quality BA majoring in English.

Revised formatting of the eight semester degree plan. Inserted the General Education language.

Also added footnotes and hyper-linked courses for access to course details. AG

To provide consistency with the General Education curriculum language.

Footnotes provides list of courses that specifically meets each General Education Outcome on behalf of the college. AG

    7. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, School of Art – STARBFA – Studio Art, Bachelor of Fine Arts presented by Neil Callander.

Made changes to admissions language and non-course program requirements. Removed the off-campus study requirement.

These are mostly minor changes that align the program language with other advising documents. We struck the off-campus study requirement as it has become untenable to manage with enrollment growth—no one was willing to not graduate a student for not submitting documentation fulfilling this requirement.

Deleted focused studies and added concentrations.

A focused study is a set of courses that a student may elect to take as part of the major, but is not required. Effectively we have already been acting as if we have concentrations by requiring students to choose one of six media areas as a focused study to graduate with a STARBFA degree. This change aligns the STARBFA degree with program definitions set forth by the university.

      Minor changes to course requirements.

These changes are designed to provide more flexibility for students when building their schedules. Currently students have a difficult time scheduling studio courses against the other requirements. Too often STARBFA students are switching to the BA degree in order to graduate in 4 years.

    8. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, School of Art – STARBFA-CRMC – Studio Art Bachelor of Fine Arts: Ceramics Concentration presented by Neil Callander.

    16. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Walton College of Business, Department of Management – MGMTBS-HRMG – Management: Human Resource Management Concentration presented by Karen Boston.

      - Add ISYS 1123, Business Application Knowledge to first year, fall semester, 8 semester plan
      - Delete ISYS 1120, Computer Competency Requirement from first year, fall semester, 8 semester plan
      - Delete 3 hours of general education elective from third year, spring semester, 8 semester plan
      - Add US History or Political Science - University Core to third year, spring semester, 8 semester plan

Pre-assessment exam scores for incoming freshmen over the past several years have been consistently indicating that only 4% of incoming freshmen have sufficient IT competency (coming out of their High School program) for Walton College courses. Therefore, most incoming Walton freshmen are required to take ISYS 1123, Business Application Knowledge in lieu of ISYS 1120, Computer Competency Requirement which currently does not count toward their degree. This change deletes ISYS 1120 as a pre-business requirement and incorporates ISYS 1123 as a pre-business and degree requirement. Additionally, reducing the total number of General Education Electives from 12 hours to 9 hours.

Offer Human Resource Management Concentration in an online format.

All courses will be developed online by the end of summer 2021.

    18. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Walton College of Business, Department of Marketing – RETLBS – Retail, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration presented by Karen Boston.

      - Delete MKTG 3633 Marketing Research from the required core.
      - Add MKTG 4343 Selling and Sales Management, MKTG 4353 Advanced Professional Selling and ISYS 4193 Business Analytics and Visualization to the required core.
      - Add new, MKTG 3013 Retail Internship to the required core.
      - Delete all concentrations
      - Modify 8 semester plan to reflect new requirements

Despite the partnerships and employment opportunities with business and industry in Northwest Arkansas, the state and nationally, the Retail Major has continued to have a low number of graduates - 4 graduates in 2019; 5 graduates in 2018 and 7 graduates in 2017. Therefore, based on feedback from our Retail Advisory Board, students, alumni and faculty, we modified the program to increase the focus on sales and analytics and included an internship requirement.

    21. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Eleanor Mann School of Nursing – NURSBS-LNBN - Nursing: LPN to BSN Option presented by Susan Patton.
      1. Revised formatting of the eight semester degree plan, inserted General Education language.

To provide consistency with the General Education Curriculum language.

These changes satisfy the criteria for them to be administratively approved for the fall 2021 catalog. AG

      2. Removed option to test out of courses

After getting to know the population the team feels it is in the best interest of the student to take all required courses to prepare them for the BSN, RN role and for NCLEX.

      3. Added requirement of students previously enrolled in similar programs to submit a letter of eligibility for readmission

Our application tells them that we require a letter of good standing but this did not make it to the catalog. This means that right now when we get an admission that cannot provide the letter from a failed program, we do not have anything preventing us from taking them. We plan to allow petitions to SAC for these particular students in the future (students right to appeal).

      4. Added clinical document compliance statement to progression policy

These requirements have been in the handbook but were added to the catalog to ensure understanding of expectations and enforceability

      5. Added statement regarding the need to withdrawal from clinical course if didactic course is dropped

Students are not prepared to continue in the clinical course without the didactic component

      6. Expanded classroom interaction methods

Expanded methods better reflect actual interactions between students and faculty
        (4u_nursbs-lnbn_report_11202020).

    22. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Eleanor Mann School of Nursing – PLNBN - Nursing Pre-LNBN presented by Susan Patton.

Footnote added indicating grade of C or above required for ENGL, core Math, and all Science courses.

In order for students to be prepared to handle the rigor and content in NURS classes, they need to demonstrate a good grasp on ENGL, Math, and Science.

Footnote added stipulating no waiver of core math will be given if STAT 2303 grade is lower than C.

Demonstration of knowledge gained in STAT course is important for students before they enter NURS courses, especially evidence based practice and capstone courses where they will utilize statistics.

Added sentence stipulating grade C or better in ENGL, core Math and all Science courses for degree credit to admission eligibility paragraph

In order for students to be prepared to handle the rigor and content in NURS classes, they need to demonstrate a good grasp on ENGL, Math, and Science
      (4v_plnbn_report_11202020).

    23. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of History – HISTMA– History, Master of Arts presented by Jim Gigantino.

      1. The Dept. of History proposes to create a non-thesis option to complete the MA degree in History. This non-thesis option would require three additional hours of 7000-level seminar (versus the thesis option) and an oral comprehensive examination in the candidate's primary area of study, research methods, and a defense of an originally researched article length essay administered by the Masters Advisory Committee.

The majority of MA students in HIST do not continue onto the PhD in HIST, therefore this alternate pathway will allow them to successfully complete the program at a faster rate as well as make the MA more relevant for their chosen career path. The vast majority of peer institutions have a non-thesis option including Alabama, Florida, Iowa State, Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt.

      2. The Dept. of History proposes to introduce a 4+1 program, where undergraduate students can take up to 12 hours of graduate courses and use them to fulfill the requirements of both the BA and the MA. These students would apply to the department and be admitted to the 4+1 program using the same metrics as the normal admission process, though they would not have to take the GRE and must produce a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 (versus 3.0 in the normal admission process). Upon completion of the BA degree and the achievement of at least a 3.0 in their graduate courses, they would be admitted to the Graduate School and complete their MA program.

The Dept. recognizes that many high achieving undergraduate students go elsewhere for their graduate degrees--this program will enable the department to attract and retain these undergraduates at UA and produce a pipeline to the MA program. This program is modeled off of other 4+1 programs in Journalism and Industrial Engineering. This type of program also exists at peer institutions including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt. Other institutions the department looked at for their 4+1 programs include Maine, NYU, Cincinnati, Brown, Virginia, Yale, Tulane, Binghamton, and Arizona State.

In terms of minimum GPA required to be considered for admission, there is a wide range of requirements from other peer very high research activity institutions. These range from "no requirement" (Virginia), to a 3.0 (Binghamton, for example), to a 3.25 (Florida, for example), a 3.3 (Arizona State, Tulane, and Cincinnati, for example),to a 3.5 (Georgia and Vanderbilt). The History Dept. is proposing to follow a lower minimum GPA than other UA programs (many are 3.5) and adopt the model several of these other R1 institutions have done and set our minimum at 3.25. This is also the cutoff for the top third of our undergraduate population.

    24. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Marketing – MKTGMS– Marketing, Master of Science presented by Karen Boston. Paul Cronan moved and Pat Koski seconded to approve pending 4000-level courses being replaced with 5000-level courses before this item reaches Graduate Council.

Proposing a new Master of Science in Marketing.

Marketing is a field that continues to grow, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Between 2018 and 2028, the profession is projected to grow 8 percent, increasing the ranks of marketing managers to over 300,000. Industrywide, needs are changing and becoming more complex, especially in Arkansas. The growing economy in Arkansas is in need of managers and leaders trained in the full skill set of marketing decision making, including retailing, customer/shopper insights, new product development, and marketing research
