4.  New Business:

The following program change proposals were approved on the CIM Program Report.  The program changes will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:

• Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for March 9, 2022
• Graduate Council meeting scheduled for March 17, 2022

a.  Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – AGBSBS - Agricultural Business, Bachelor of Science in Agri Food & Life Sciences.

The majority of the changes made here are the result of moving existing requirements into different areas. Portions of the departmental core are moving into the concentrations and vice versa. Other requirements are reorganized into a new header titled "Agribusiness Prerequisite Core". The net changes to the program, the total of New Requirements being added and Reduced Options from requirements being removed is 10 hours. In the AGBSBS we are adding 3 hours of Computing Competency (ASTM or ISYS 1123) and in the AGEC Concentration, 7 hours of options in the Statistics Requirement are being removed (AGST 4023 and STAT 4003/4001L). This results in 10 hours of net changes. All other changes are a reorganizing of existing courses and requirements and the addition of new options in some areas.
The attached packet includes further information, including annotated checksheets demonstrating the net changes being made. On the checksheets, areas highlighted with BLUE text are existing courses or requirements that have been reorganized or moved to new locations or additional courses added to increase options for students. Areas highlighted with RED text are either new requirements (Computing Competency) or eliminated courses (AGST 4023 and STAT 4003/4001L).

The purpose for our curriculum reorganization and minor changes are:
1. To increase overall quality and performance of Agribusiness students.
2. To increase preparedness of Agribusiness students to be successful in our upper division courses.
3. To encourage the development of a cohort-based program.
4. To provide a more prescriptive course sequencing and increase rigor.

Over the past several years as our University, College, and Department have grown, the AEAB Faculty have experienced an increasing number of students in upper division courses who are not adequately prepared to perform at that level academically. While there are a number of (known and unknown) factors which contribute to this reality, we believe that we can do more as a Department to improve student preparedness and performance. Too many of our students put off taking the very courses that would help them succeed as juniors and seniors, and these courses are included in our new Prerequisite Core. Making the expectation clear to our students that they must complete college level MATH and Statistics, Accounting and Record Keeping, Micro and Macro economics, and other key subject areas, will lead to our students having the requisite preparation to take on our more challenging upper division course work. The Prerequisite Core helps students to be better prepared and to move through our program in cohorts, which helps them develop support networks amongst their peers (4a_agbsbs_report_02252022, 4a_agbsbs_proposed_program_ changes_ packet_final_02252022).

b.   Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – AGBSBS-ABMM - Agricultural Business: Agri Management & Marketing Concentration.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS. The majority of the changes made here are the result of moving existing requirements into different areas. Portions of the departmental core are moving into the concentrations and vice versa.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS (4b_agbsbs-abmm_report_02252022, 4b_agbsbs-abmm_program_change_proposal_2022_final_02252022).

c. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – AGBSBS-AGEC - Agricultural Business: Agricultural Economics Concentration.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS. The majority of the changes made here are the result of moving existing requirements into different areas. Portions of the departmental core are moving into the concentrations and vice versa.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS (4c_agbsbs-agec_report_02252022, 4c_agbsbs-agec_program_change_proposal_2022_final_02252022).

d.   Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – AGBSBS-PRLW - Agricultural Business: Pre-Law Concentration.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS. The majority of the changes made here are the result of moving existing requirements into different areas. Portions of the departmental core are moving into the concentrations and vice versa.

See full description of changes in AGBSBS (4d_agbsbs-prlw_report_02252022, 4d_agbsbs-prlw_program_change_proposal_2022_final_02252022).

e. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – AGBS-M - Agricultural Business Minor.

Addition of a Computing Competency course, ASTM 2903 or ISYS 1123 adds 3 hours to the minor. This requirement was already indirectly a part of the minor due to it being a prerequisite for multiple AGEC courses. Now it is formally added to the AGBS-M. Three courses are removed from the list of Controlled Electives, MATH 2043, ECON 3033, and ECON 3133, but Walton courses can still be considered through substitution process. We prefer students completing the AGBS-M complete the majority of their Controlled Electives in AGEC upper division courses. Students will be required to complete the Minor Core (9 hours) before progressing to upper division Core and Controlled Electives.

The attached document is an annotated AGBS-M checksheet that shows the changes being made. Changes highlighted in BLUE are existing requirements that have been moved to new areas (Core to Controlled Electives or vice versa) and changes highlighted in RED are either new requirements or existing options being removed.

These changes bring our AGBS-M Program in line with our revised AGBSBS Program. We formally incorporate computing competency into our Major and Minor and have reorganized courses listed in the Core Electives and Controlled Electives to better reflect our Major Program sequencing. The additional requirements of completing the Core Requirements (9 hours) allows us to better sequence and prepare students for upper division AGEC courses and to identify students who need additional support (4e_agbs-m_report_02252022, 4e_agbs-m_minor_program_change_proposal_2022_final_02252022).

f. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Arts and Sciences Dean - ARSC Acad Regs - ARSC College Academic Regulations.

Under the section "Combined Academic and Medical, Dental, or Pharmacy Degree:"

1) Added pharmacy as an option.

2) Changed the requirement to include courses in Fulbright College, not necessarily residency.

Changes would allow outstanding students going to pharmacy school in addition to dental and medical school to complete a degree from the university, including students whose majors are outside of Fulbright College (4f_arsc_acad_regs_report_02252022).

g.   Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, School of Art – GDESBFA - Graphic Design, Bachelor of Fine Arts.

i) Removed GDES 2313 and GDES 3313 as admissions requirements.

After consultation with the ARTS foundations instructors, the graphic design faculty decided to consider applicants who would be finishing the ARTS 1919C and ARTS 1929C foundations courses, as the work examples from those courses, as well as input from the foundations instructors, would provide us with enough background on each applicant for proper adjudication. Therefore, the GDES 2313 and GDES 3313 would be courses taken after an applicant has been accepted to the program.

ii) Reorganized/reworded 8SDP.

For clarity and consistency across other ARSC degree programs.

iii) Added the exclusion of ARHS 1003 from the SoA electives.
This course is intro-level and not intended for art majors to use as one of their electives in the major.

iv) Added the previously existing Interdisciplinary Elective back in as a requirement. The other three changes listed above were approved by UCPC in the fall. The proposal was rolled back to make the change.  It was mistakenly removed during the editing phase of the three changes above (4g_gdesbfa_report_02252022).

h.  Proposed undergraduate program change for the Walton College of Business, Department of Management - LEAD-M - Leadership Minor for Non-Business Students.

Adding a minor in leadership for non-business students.

Leadership is a valuable skill for students to acquire whether they plan to work in business or other organizations. This minor is designed to be accessible to non-business students (4h_lead-m_report_02252022).

i. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation – PBHLBS - Public Health, Bachelor of Science.

ENSC 1003/1001L were removed from the public health general course requirements section. The public health related electives were removed. The residual 14 credit hours were added to the general electives section. The eight semester plan was updated to reflect the changes.

ENSC 1003 & 1001L were not focused enough on public health and took more of an agricultural and benchtop science approach. Therefore, the course was not as applicable for our major as anticipated.

The “health-related electives” were removed because students and advisors reported that it created difficulty finding courses and also prevented students from completing minors across campus, as the health-related elective prefix listing were restrictive.

These changes will create more flexibility for public health students, improve graduation rates as the students will not be restricted by course offerings, and will allow students to create their own cognate areas and/or complete UA approved minors with the help of our professional advisors.

The changes were recommended and endorsed by all public health faculty, our public health student advisory group, and COEHP advisors (4i_pbhlbs_report_02252022).

j. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation – RESMBS - Recreation and Sport Management, Bachelor of Science.

PSYC, HORT, CNED, and RESM alpha codes were added to the related electives section. UNIV 1001 was changed to UNIV in the related electives section.

The alpha codes were added to provide students with greater flexibility to choose courses more related to their interests and career path. This will also provide administrative relief because students have been utilizing these alpha codes through program modifications. UNIV 1001 was changed to UNIV in anticipation of future courses with this alpha code (4j_resmbs_report_02252022).

v. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Architecture and Design Dean - DSGNMDS-HLWL - Design Studies: Health and Wellness Design Concentration.

To add a new concentration to the Master of Design Studies.
Removed ARCH 4152 upon return.

The proposed concentration in Health and Wellness Design is one of the most relevant design specializations in the architectural disciplines. Health and wellbeing are significant issues and there is demand for design knowledge across all market segments including workplace, education, single- and multi-family housing, long-term care, retail and hospitality design.

Competing building certification programs further underscore the demand for health and wellness expertise from design professionals. The International WELL Building Institute claims more than 3.24 billion square feet of certified construction and Fitwell’s VIRAL Response strategies have been implemented in more than 100 million square feet of interior space. The distribution of these metrics reveal dramatic and continuous growth over the last ten years.

While these issues have always been important, they have been further highlighted by the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

The development of the Health and Wellness concentration utilizes existing courses across the U of A campus as electives to provide rich, cross-disciplinary learning that directly supports a range of advanced design studio courses (4v_dsgnmds-hlwl_report_02252022).

w. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction – CATEME – Career and Technical Education, Master of Education.

Program Deactivation

Student enrollment has been extremely low for many years (i.e., below state viability standards). The department is working to allow similar curricular opportunities in their CIED MED program (as a special interest track) for interested students (4w_cateme_deletion_report_02252022, 4w_cateme_deletion_ltrofnotification_02252022).
