  1. The minutes for the November 20, 2020 meeting were approved.

  2. Course Change Proposals:
All course change proposals were approved without opposition. The approved courses are listed on the CIM Course Report created by CourseLeaf and will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:
    • Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for January 13, 2020
    • Graduate Council meeting scheduled for January 21, 2020

  3. Old Business:
    None

  4. New Business:
The following program change proposals were approved on the CIM Program Report without opposition with the exception of 4k. The program changes will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the
    • Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for January 13, 2020
    • Graduate Council meeting scheduled for January 21, 2020

    1. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Human Environmental Sciences – BRKDBS – Birth through Kindergarten, Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Science presented by Tim Killian.

Added "or STAT 2303" as option for HDFS 4773 Research in HDFS: Statistical Approaches in BRKD core requirements.

Added MATH 1203, pre-req for STAT 2303, as specification to core requirements.

(Please note that some clean up of minor errors are noted in the check sheet/8 semester plan word documents that reflect changes already present in the system. Ex: Name change of Analytical Approaches to Research Methods on HDFS. Please contact me with any questions: lkherold@uark.edu )

STAT 2303 is sufficient to prepare those BRKD majors who seek to become licensed early childhood educators and work in the classroom to read and understand studies in the field of Education. Those who aim to apply to a Masters program can choose to the HDFS 4773. Adding this option for students will resolve an issue with HDFS 4773 often conflicting with student teaching/internship placements, especially for transfer students from other majors and other institutions.

Revised formatting of the eight semester degree plan. Inserted the General Education language.
Also added footnotes and hyper-linked courses for access to course details, by AG.

To provide consistency with the General Education curriculum language.
Footnotes provides list of courses that specifically meets each General Education Outcome on behalf of the college by AG.

    2. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Human Environmental Sciences – HDFSBS – Human Development and Family Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Science presented by Tim Killian.

      1. Add College Algebra and Principles of Statistics (STAT 2303) to required courses. These courses were added to bolster students' abilities to participate in research activities in HDFS.
      2. Add Introduction to Cultural Competence (HDFS 2493) to required courses. Introduction to Cultural Competence is a key component of the HDFS curriculum. The instructor has designed the course to introduce key concepts so that students are better prepared for the more advanced course, Multicultural Families for which HDFS 2493 will be a pre-requisite.
      3. Remove PHIL 2003 from required courses and replace with "Choose 3 credit hours from Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL 2003) or Introduction to Ethics (PHIL 2103)." Many HDFS students are transfers from other programs and have already taken PHIL 2103. This addition to the program will prevent those students from taking extra coursework with no appreciable decline in the expectations in the HDFS curriculum.
      4. Change Pre-Internship from HDFS 4451 to HDFS 3481. A course change was proposed to lower the Pre-Internship course from a 4000-level to a 3000-level course and that change is reflected here.
      5. Reduce General Electives from 14 to 11 credit hours. This was necessary to accommodate the two additional courses (HDFS 2493 and STAT 2303).
      6. Remove the requirement that students take both General Psychology and General Sociology to allow students to choose between either of those courses. HDFS students are currently required to take 15 credit hours of courses that meet the State Minimum Core. After this change, HDFS students will only be required to take 12 credit hours that meet State Minimum Core. This will allow three additional General Elective credit hours.

    3. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Human Environmental Sciences – HNADBS – Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Bachelor of Science in Human Environmental Science presented by Kelly Way.

Addition of: All NUTR students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all NUTR required core courses to the plan of study
Addition of: All NUTR students must earn a grade of “C” or higher in all required sciences courses to the plan of study

Addition of BIOL 1543/1541L: Add Principles of Biology to Plan of Study: add 4 hours to science Delete 4 hours from general electives

Addition of adding "C" or higher to NUTR Core courses and Science courses ensures that students have a better understanding of the knowledge needed to be successful in the NUTR program.

Previously the BIOL dept would waive the prerequisite of BIOL 1543/1541L for BIOL 2013 Microbiology; however that is no longer the situation.

    4. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Music – MUEDBM – Music Education, Bachelor of Music presented by Daniel Abrams.

Added back the language regarding the internship process, with a few minor updates regarding the dates, locations, and PRAXIS test changes.

This language was mistakenly omitted from when the new MUEDBM program (effective Fall 2020) was split off from MUSCBM.

    5. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction – STEMCP- STEM Education, Certificate of Proficiency presented by Shawn Bell.

To create a new 9 hour STEM Education Certificate.

Of the vast number of STEM majors on campus, most will enter professions where communicating complex information in science, math, computer science, engineering, medical professions, etc. is highly valued. Offering a certificate in STEM education in which STEM majors can learn valuable skills for explaining and teaching information in any employment situation will be an important contribution to the purpose of this university and to future employers of these students. Most STEM majors have 9 credits of free electives, which will allow this certificate to fit into their degree plans. Not only will the experience of the certificate courses benefit the students, it serves as a gateway into becoming a teacher of STEM subjects, exposing students to the idea of taking more courses to earn teacher licensure while earning their STEM degree. Most of the courses in the certificate can be applied to the Minor in STEM Education or to the teacher licensure program for math, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science. Attracting STEM majors to the certificate program will increase the pool of students who may decide to continue on to become teachers.

    6. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction – STEM-M - STEM Education Minor presented by Shawn Bell.

To propose a new minor in STEM Education that replaces the current UAteach minor.

Of the vast number of STEM majors on campus, only a few are interested in becoming teachers at the secondary level. However, most will enter professions where communicating complex information in science, math, computer science, engineering, etc. is highly valued. Offering a minor in STEM education in which STEM majors can learn valuable skills for teaching and conveying information, which will be an important contribution to the purpose of this university and to future employers of these students. Most STEM majors have 15 credits of free electives, which will allow this minor to fit into their degree plans. The teacher licensure program for math, biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science will benefit as the pool of students who obtain a minor in STEM education increases, and some of those students will decide to become teachers.

    7. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Education Dean  – UTCHCS - Licensure for UA Teach Computer Science 4-12 presented by Shawn Bell.

      Program deactivation proposal.

This licensure program does not lead to the University of Arkansas degree or credential. It's a series of courses that students can take to prepare for teacher licensure. Licensure programs are not included in the catalog, and this program should not have been submitted in Program Management.
      (4g_utchcs_report_12182020).

    8. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction – UTCH-M - UAteach Minor presented by Shawn Bell.

      Program deactivation proposal.

UA Teach program in collaboration with Fulbright and COEHP deans' offices have decided to go in a different direction with their minor. Therefore, the decision was made to deactivate this minor and offer a new minor and a new certificate of proficiency in STEM Education. The program believes that the new minor and the new certificate will provide a better exposure to the broader field of education.
      (4h_utch-m_report_12182020).

    9. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction – ACPAMC – Arkansas Curriculum/Program Administrator Post Master's Certificate presented by Rhett Hutchins.

      Program deactivation proposal.

There has not been any demand for this program for a number of years. The program does not meet ADHE viability standards.

    10. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction – AUTSGC – Autism Spectrum Disorders Graduate Certificate presented by Rhett Hutchins.

      Program deactivation proposal.

Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders does not meet ADHE viability standards due to limited demand and low enrollment.

    11. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Rehabilitation, Human Resources, and Communication Disorders – EDSTMC – Educational Statistics and Research Methods Post Master's Certificate presented by Wen-Juo Lo.

Dean Patricia Koski moved and Rhett Hutchins seconded to table the request and roll it back to the college curriculum committee in order to adjust the grade point average guidelines.

We are reducing the number of required hours from 18 to 15 credit hours that will include 9 required hours and 6 elective hours. Originally, the program required 12 credit hours which was reduced to 9 credit hours by moving applied multivariate statistics as an elective option. We are also expanding elective selections.

Admission requirements are not being added or changed; they are moved from the Overview page to this CIM page.

Required GPA is changing from 3.5 to 3.4.

The changes are proposed to balance the content knowledge the students need and the course offerings. All core courses are offered every year. Specifically, ESRM 6403, 6413, and 6533 are offered every semester now. At least one course from the elective list is offered every semester. This will allow students to complete the certificate in a timely manner. The changes will also allow more flexibility in the program plan and accommodate students who are interested in qualitative methods.
