Jeannine Durdik called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

  1. The minutes for the November 17, 2017 meeting were approved.

  2. Course Change Proposals:
    All course change proposals were approved without opposition.  The approved courses are listed on the CIM Course Report created by CourseLeaf and will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:
    • Faculty Senate, meeting scheduled for January 17, 2018
    • Graduate Council meeting scheduled for January 18, 2018

    The following program change proposals were approved on the CIM Program Report with two oppositions.  See items b. and f.  The other program changes will be forwarded for consideration as appropriate to the:

    1. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences, Department of Human Environmental Sciences, EVMG-M – Event Management Minor was presented by Dede Hamm.

      Due to overwhelming student requests from outside the program for a minor in event management, the program has developed and is requesting to implement this minor.  There is high demand for graduates in the field of event management and the board of advisors for the hospitality program fully encourage and support this new minor (4a_evmg-m_report, 4a_evmg-m-newoption_ltrofnotif).

    2. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, EGEDBA – English Education, Bachelor of Arts in Teaching.

      Paul Cronan moved and Jim Gigantino seconded to remove this item from the agenda and roll it back to the College of Education and Health Professions Dean’s approval level to provide additional time for them to collaborate with Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.  Motion passed (4b_egedbat_report, 4b_egedbat_newlicensure_proposal, 4b_letter_of_intent_e_uabateged).

    3. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Education and Health Professions, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, FREDBA – French Education, Bachelor of Arts in Teaching was presented Freddie Bowles.

      The Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English Education, French Education, German Education, Spanish Education, and Social Studies Education is a new degree program in education leading to licensure in the respective content areas (K-12 or 7-12 depending on the major).

      The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education, August 2016, identified 6 subject areas that are currently “high-need fields”: bilingual education and English language acquisition, foreign language, math, reading specialist, science and special education. In Arkansas, the pst includes art, computer science, family and consumer sciences, journalism, library, mathematics, music, physical science (chemistry, physics), social studies, Spanish, and special education for 2017-18. Vacant positions across the state for 2016-17 totaled 1572, not including administrative positions. Vacancies in English totaled 115; foreign language totaled 35 (not disaggregated by language); and social studies totaled 73 (4c_fredbat_report, 4c_letter_of_intent_e_uabatfred, 4c_fredbat_newlicensure_proposal).

    7. Proposed undergraduate program change for the College of Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering – DATA-M – Data Analytics Minor was presented by Manuel Rossetti. 

      Creation of a minor in Data Analytics.  Data analytics, which encompasses data collection, analysis of data, and making decisions from data is a global megatrend that will offer staggering business opportunities in decades to come. Data analytics professionals have successfully shown significant impact on improving business across industries globally. Although there are a lot of professionals in the workforce in Northwest Arkansas, only a minor fraction is equipped with knowledge and skills in data analytics. There is an ever-increasing need of a larger and well-prepared workforce in data analytics professionals in almost all business sectors in Northwest Arkansas. There is an explosion of market demand among employers in Northwest Arkansas for qualified graduates in the NW Arkansas region with data analytics skills (4g_data-m_report, 4g_newoption_ltrofnotif, 4g_data-m_newoption_ltrsofSupport).

    8. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Electrical Engineering, ELEGMS – Electrical Engineering, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering was presented by Manuel Rossetti.

      Allowing for automatic waiver of GRE requirement for students seeking M.S.E.E. through distance education. Electrical Engineering faculty voted in favor of allowing this waiver. This will allow applications to be processed without a waiver having to be requested each time. Most students applying for the M.S.E.E. through distance education meet one or both of these requirements (4h_elegms_report).

    9. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation, HSESPH-PDGY – Health, Sport & Exercise Science Kinesiology Pedagogy Concentration was presented by Cathy Lirgg.

      Replacing 9 hours of Pedagogy core with PHED 5253 and PHED 5273, as well as 3 additional hours of electives.  Better prepares PhD students for the settings in which they will work (4i_hsesph-pdgy_report).

    10. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Health, Human Performance   and Recreation, PHEDME – Physical Education was presented by Cathy Lirgg.

      (1) Replace ESRM 5393 with PHED 5803; (2) Remove 6 hours of electives and replace with PHED 5553 and PHED 5313; and (3) Replace KINS 605V with PHED 6723 Project Implementation and Data Analysis (the course is in the approval process).

      New courses better meet the needs of students by focusing on physical education assessments (4j_phedme_report).
