All program change proposals were approved without opposition. The program changes are listed on the CIM Program Report created by CourseLeaf.
    1. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences, Department of History – AAST-BA, African and African American Studies Combined Major was presented by Lynda Coon. This update to the major includes the addition of several courses added to the curriculum by new faculty. It also includes the addition of several independent study courses and a study abroad course that AAST faculty have taught in the past but under special topics numbers.
Finally, AAST is one of the only area studies programs in Fulbright College that does not have an honors option for its students. With the support of the Fulbright Honors Program administration, this honors proposal was crafted that will give students conducting research on AAST related topics the option to complete an honors thesis in AAST instead of another department. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    2. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of History – AASTGC – GC, Graduate Certificate in African & African American Studies was presented by Lynda Coon. The Graduate Certificate in African & African American Studies is a 15-credit hour program conceived as a rigorous interdisciplinary study of the legacy of the African diaspora and African-descended people’s global experiences with a focus on Africa, the United States, and the Caribbean. The certificate’s broad-based curriculum and the participation of fifteen different faculty members across the University that will assist graduate students who choose to study the history and culture of the African diaspora. Courses in the program strive to advance social consciousness, inject principles of reason and equality into international debates, and examine the important role that race has played in the creation of the world. Students will therefore gain both the theoretical and analytic skills from a broad array of disciplines in order to advance research on multiple aspects of the African diaspora. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    3. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, Department of Animal Science – ANSCBS-ANSC-BSA, Animal Science – Animal Science Concentration was presented by Charles Rosenkrans. ANSC 3072, ANSC 3491L, ANSC 4072, and ANSC 4173 were mistakenly listed as Animal Science Electives in 2014-2015 catalog. The proposed change lists them as Discipline-related Electives where they were intended to be placed. ANSC 3822 is no longer taught, and ANSC 4123 is an appropriate substitute. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    4. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, Department of Animal Science – ANSCBS-ENQS-BSA, Animal Science – Equine Science Concentration was presented by Charles Rosenkrans. ANSC 3491L and ANSC 4072 were mistakenly listed as Animal Science Electives in 2014-2015 catalog.
    5. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, Department of Animal Science – ANSCBS-PPRF-BSA, Animal Science –Pre-Professional Concentration was presented by Charles Rosenkrans.
    6. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Arts and Sciences Dean - College Admissions Requirements was presented by Lynda Coon. Fulbright College proposes to remove language from the admission requirement which prevented students from receiving degree credit for the 1003 Elementary I level of a world language. This change will simplify academic advising by providing an equitable approach in the awarding of credit for 1003 Elementary I language courses for all University of Arkansas students, and thus aid in retention and degree completion for students. Students who do not meet the long-standing Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences admission requirement (at least 2 units of a world language at the high school level) will still be required to complete one semester of language study (1003 Elementary I of a world language); however, these students will now be allowed to receive degree credit for that course. Similarly, any Fulbright student who wishes to enroll in a world language course at the 1003 Elementary I level, or receive credit for a world language 1003 Elementary I course by advanced achievement in a higher level course, will be able to do so (including any student who has already met the Fulbright admission requirement). The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    7. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Art – ARTMFA –MFA, Master of Fine Arts was presented by Lynda Coon. With the hire of Dr. Alissa Walls, the Department of Art's Contemporary Art Historian, we are able to offer our graduate students new courses such as ARHS 4763 Seminar in Critical Theory that meet our benchmark institutions' offerings and are usually required of graduate students seeking their MFA. The minor change to the MFA program will better prepare our students in developing their critical thinking skills, writing, and portfolios towards a professional career in the Visual Arts. Additionally, an increase in ARHS requirements and decrease in the Studio Art Electives requirement from 15 to 12 hours reflects MFA Program requirements at benchmark institutions.
With the hire of Dr. Leo Mazow and Dr. Ana Pulido-Rull in addition to the 2014 hire of Dr. Tim Landry, the Department of Art is able to offer our students new ARHS course offerings that are not always specific to pre- or post-19th century courses, which explains the change in designation to 6 hours of general art history course offerings. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    8. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Business Dean – BADMMB – MBA, Master of Business Administration presented by Anne O’Leary-Kelly and Vikas Anand. Given the goals of mid-career managers, a consistent demand from stakeholders was the ability to specialize and build strength in key areas of business, such as supply chain, retail, and data analytics. In order to fulfill this need, a number of focused study areas that fit the needs of our stakeholders has been proposed including retail marketing, supply chain, finance, entrepreneurship, and analytics. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    9. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology – BIOL-M - Minor in Biology was presented by Lynda Coon. The current catalog description of the minor contains a reference to the requirements for the BA in biology which is inconvenient and confusing for the students. For instance, students have falsely concluded that it might be possible that both of the two BIOL electives can be 2000-level classes, and it is not entirely clear from the current description that they are not required to take a laboratory. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    10. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology – BIOLBA – BA, Biology was presented by Lynda Coon. The PHIL course requirements were somehow mistakenly moved to the beginning of the course requirements instead of in position #4; these were moved back to correct what appears to have been a typographical error.
Documents associated with ADHE Act 747 compliance stipulated that a minimum of 20 credits required for a major must come from upper-level courses. We have added a sentence at the end of the Biology, B.A. requirements to enforce this. Our objective is to ensure that all students complete at least 20 credit hours of upper-level courses within the major. Depending on the configuration of courses selected by a student under the previous requirements, it was possible for a student to fulfill the requirements within the major with several 2000-level courses and ending up with less than 20 hours of upper-level courses required by the major.
No change to the 8-semester plan was required, because it already took into account the possible need for upper-level BIOL electives to meet the Fulbright College 24-hour rule (24 hours of 3000+ Fulbright College coursework). The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    11. Proposed graduate program change for the School of Law, Department of Law – BLAWGC – GC, Business Law Certificate was presented by Carl Circo. The business law certificate addresses calls from employers for law graduates to demonstrate a commitment to concentrated study in law school with an emphasis on skills training. The program also gives our graduates the opportunity to distinguish themselves by their demonstrated interest in a particular field in an increasingly competitive market for associate positions at law firms. ). The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    12. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Electrical Engineering – ELEGPH – PhD, Electrical Engineering was presented by Manuel Rossetti. Cleaning up the language from the split in MS and PhD requirements. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    13. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of English – ENGLBA – BA, English was presented by Lynda Coon. We're simply clarifying our existing Math requirement: that we want students to take both College Algebra and a course that requires College Algebra as a prerequisite. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    14. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – Earth Science Writing Requirement presented by Lynda Coon. The Department of Geosciences faculty voted to change the prefix for GEOG and GEOL to GEOS to unify department curriculum, making it clearer for students and advisors. This also helps minimize wording and confusion in degree programs in the undergraduate and graduate catalogs. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    15. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – ERSCBS – BS, Earth Science presented by Lynda Coon.
    16. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences – ESWSBS – BSA, Environmental, Soil and Water Science presented by Kathy Smith. We are adding ENSC 4021L Water Quality Lab to the Natural Resources core under the Environmental Science list of courses. We do not require the course and cannot because of resource limitations; however, we encourage our majors to take the course. Currently, there is no place where this hands-on course acquiring skills in water quality analysis "counts" for environmental science credits other than in elective hours. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    17. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures – FRENBA – BA, French presented by Lynda Coon. We are planning to develop new, five-year dual degree programs with other colleges across campus; the first of these (with more to come down the road we hope) we expect will be a five-year deal degree program between German and Engineering which includes a full year of study abroad in Germany with an internship. We hope this new program can have its first cohort of students starting in Fall 2015. To make this practical we need to streamline slightly our WLLC major requirements for classes in addition to the major language classes: we are changing the requirement of WLIT 1113 AND PHIL 2003 to an “OR”, and we are reducing our 9-hours of additional language-related course (back) to 6. This reduces major in French from 45 to 39. The total number of hours for degree completion remains unchanged at 120 hours. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    18. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – Geography Departmental Honors presented by Lynda Coon.
    19. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – Geography Writing Requirements presented by Lynda Coon.
    20. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – GEOG-M – Minor in Geography presented by Lynda Coon.
    21. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – GEOGBA – BA, Geography presented by Lynda Coon. These minor changes to the Geography BA are intended to increase the technical rigor of the program by requiring GEOS 3543, Geospatial Applications and Information Science as a technical class that complements Introduction to Cartography and better prepares students for post-graduate employment. In addition, specifying a technical class as one of the 15 hours of 3000-level or above Geography electives provides those students who do not chose the GIS/Cartography specialization with stronger technical skills at graduation.
Also, the Department of Geosciences faculty voted to change the prefix for GEOG and GEOL to GEOS to unify department curriculum, making it clearer for students and advisors. This also helps minimize wording and confusion in degree programs in the undergraduate and graduate catalogs. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    22. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Geosciences – GEOGMS – MS, Geography presented by Lynda Coon. The goal of the MS Geography is to prepare students for doctoral research or employment in geography or related disciplines. The program will help students develop expertise in key areas of geography. These include physical, environmental, human, and regional studies, as well as cartography, remote sensing, photogrammetry, and computational aspects of geographic information science (GIS) or geoinformatics. MS Geography graduates will have geographic science skills to solve problems using a combination of scholarly written and verbal communication, geographic information systems (GIS) and related computational resources, and quantitative reasoning. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    23. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – Geology Departmental Honors presented by Lynda Coon.
    24. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – Geology Writing Requirements presented by Lynda Coon.
    25. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – GEOL-M – Minor in Geology presented by Lynda Coon.
    26. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – GEOLBS – GEPH - BS, Geology/Geophysics Concentration presented by Lynda Coon.
    27. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – GEOLBS-BS, Geology presented by Lynda Coon.
    28. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures – GERMBA – BA, German presented by Lynda Coon. This reduces major requirements in German 45 to 39. The total number of hours for degree completion remains unchanged at 120 hours. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    29. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geosciences – HPRV-M – Minor in Historic Preservation presented by Lynda Coon.
    30. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures – ITAL-M – Minor in Italian presented by Lynda Coon. A minor in Italian will also enhance interdisciplinary studies in many areas in the Arts and Humanities, as well as provide a useful complement to studies in Business, Engineering, and Architecture. The School of Architecture has spear-headed the creation of the Rome Center, and the College of Engineering has an exchange program in Turin, Italy. The Business School, too, sends students to Paderno del Grappa, Italy, through the Consortium Institute for Management and Business Analysis (CIMBA). Every year, we have students from these schools and colleges taking Italian courses. There is no question that a minor in Italian would be attractive to them.
We believe that the creation of a minor in Italian will enhance our students’ educational experience, help increase the presence of the University of Arkansas at the Rome Center and in the world at large, and play a positive role in supporting the University of Arkansas’s goal of becoming a Top 50 public research university. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    31. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures – JPBO-M – Minor in Japanese (Business Orientation) presented by Lynda Coon. By including JAPN 4343 Professional Japanese II: Translation in the list of electives, students in the Japanese minor program will be able to seek a career-ready level of Japanese language proficiency by an internationally recognized measure (defined as Level N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test). The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    32. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures – LAST-BA, Latin American and Latino Studies Combined Major presented by Lynda Coon. We have added 2 ENGL courses and 8 HIST courses to our list of the existing electives from which our students can choose. We are adding "Religion of Latin America" - course proposal being submitted in tandem (tentatively ANTH 3553). We have deleted 2 courses (GEOG 2003 and SCWK 3193) because they do not contain enough Latin American/Latino - specific content. The courses added to our list of electives strengthen and diversify our curriculum and provide more options for our students. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    33. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Mathematical Sciences – MATHMS – MS, Mathematics presented by Lynda Coon. The catalog copy needs to be updated to reflect current course offerings for computational math and to make explicit the requirements for the thesis option. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    34. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Walton College of Business, Department of Marketing – MKTGBS-BSBA, Marketing presented by Karen Boston. To incorporate two, new marketing courses within the choices for marketing electives to fulfill the major requirements. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    35. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Arts and Sciences Dean – MRST-M – Minor in Medieval & Renaissance Studies presented by Lynda Coon. New courses that are specifically designated as "MRST" Medieval and Renaissance Studies courses needed to be included in the list of classes that will satisfy MRST Minor requirements. THTR 4773 is being removed, because it is being deleted as a course offering by the THTR department. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    36. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Music – MUSCBM-VPRF – BM, Music-Music Voice Performance Concentration presented by Lynda Coon. The requested changes will allow vocal performance majors to be competitive should they wish to pursue a stage career as a vocalist and bring the total hours required for the degree into compliance with ACT 747 of the Arkansas State Legislature, reducing the number of required hours from 123 to 120. This is being accomplished by reducing the number of MUAP 110V and 210V hours from 6 each to 4 each, reducing the number of require ensemble hours from 8 to 7, and by condensing the Italian vocal diction course to include English and revising the German vocal diction course to include French. At the same time, we will be increasing the world language requirement by three hours. Increasing the number of world language hours for the voice performance major is essential in fostering understanding of the languages they must be able to sing. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    37. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Music – MUSCBM – BM, Music presented by Lynda Coon. Needed for a change that is being made to the Voice Performance Concentration regarding the world language requirement. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    38. Proposed graduate program change for the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing – NURSDP – DP, Nursing Practice presented by Kathleen Barta. The proposed concentration of Family Nurse Practitioner is an addition to the current online DNP program. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    39. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Philosophy – PHILBA – BA, Philosophy presented by Lynda Coon. Our intent is to increase accessibility of the major, increase the possibility of joint majors, and to bring requirements into line with practices at peer institutions as per ADHE external review. No effect on the content of the philosophy portion of the philosophy major, except that students have more flexibility for pursuing interests and specialties. Department voted to change requirement in the interest of making a more "user friendly" major as suggested by ADHE. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    40. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Philosophy – PHILPH – PhD, Philosophy presented by Lynda Coon. As per recommendation of 2014 ADHE external review, language requirement is being eliminated to reflect best practices in the field, increase student retention and speed degree completion. Advisors will work with students to develop programs needed to acquire specialist knowledge as appropriate. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    41. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Psychology – PSYCPH – PhD, Psychology presented by Lynda Coon. The changes are made to ensure continued adherence to the requirements of the American Psychological Association's Council on Accreditation, who accredits the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program, while also responding to current student and alumni and faculty survey data regarding ways to improve the quality and effectiveness of the clinical psychology training program. In addition, some changes were made to improve the accuracy of current course titles and descriptions as well as to correct errors related to the required courses, number of credits allowed for variable courses, and the terms in which the courses are offered. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    42. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Walton College of Business, Department of Marketing – RETLBS-BSBA, Retail presented by Karen Boston. To incorporate two, new marketing courses within the choices for marketing electives to fulfill the major requirements in the Marketing concentration and add one, new marketing course within the choices for marketing electives in the General Retail concentration. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    43. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Arts and Sciences Dean – RLST-M – Minor in Religious Studies presented by Lynda Coon. These changes reflect the fact that new courses in Religion have been added since the catalog was last updated. Additionally, the Religious Studies Steering Committee thought it prudent to have RLST minors take at least one of the "Introduction" courses to Islam, Buddhism, or Judaism as part of the minor (optional, not required, and limited to three hours of 2000-level course work). Rationale: the director of the program already accepts HUMN 2013, JWST 2003, and MEST 2003 for the minor, but does so as course substitutions. This change formalizes what is already a fairly longstanding practice. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    44. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Social Work – Social Work Writing Requirements presented by Lynda Coon. Social work students complete the research/analytical writing requirement by passing SCWK 4073 with a C or better. This change streamlines the process of submitting the Senior Writing Requirement. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    45. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of Social Work – SCWKMS – MSW, Social Work presented by Lynda Coon. This proposed program change reflects a shift in curriculum that removes a general practice course in the advanced year in order to provide students with the opportunity to take a population specific practice course (selective). This proposal also includes the addition of two new population specific practice courses from which students may choose. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.
    46. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures – SPANBA – BA, Spanish presented by Lynda Coon. This reduces major requirements in Spanish from 48 to 42. The total number of hours for degree completion remains unchanged at 120 hours. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    47. Proposed undergraduate program change for the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Theatre – THTRBA – BA, Theatre presented by Lynda Coon. The newly renamed Department of Theatre is taking the opportunity to revise our current B.A. Curriculum. There are two major goals for the redesigned B.A. degree in theatre. We hope to provide a clear path to graduation in 4 years and want to prepare our graduates for the rigors of the 21st century entertainment industry. Secondly, this new curriculum more closely aligns with the Top 50 peer institutions that we consulted, as well as the national standards set forth by the National Alliance of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Faculty Senate meeting.
    48. Proposed graduate program change for the Department of English – TWRHGC – GC, Technical Writing and Public Rhetorics presented by David Jolliffe. The certificate program targets working professionals who are looking to improve their skills in writing in business environments or looking to credential themselves for such work. Most such individuals often already work a full-time job that makes attending on-campus courses a burden at best. In addition, of our existing graduate students in the program, around 75% of them have opted to take online courses where possible, citing the increased flexibility of that mode of instruction. The proposal was unanimously approved and will be forwarded for consideration at the November 2014 Graduate Council meeting.

  5. Other items for consideration:
    1. Pat Koski proposed that some program changes for both graduate and undergraduate could be considered as consent items (for example the number of Geosciences changes that were proposed to clean up the catalog copy) to be voted on as a block of changes rather than address each individually.
    2. Concerns were expressed about the layout of the agenda due to the report formatting provided by CourseLeaf. Alice Griffin agreed to redesign future agendas to group college information together. Meanwhile, she will continue to partner with the Registrar’s Office on customizing the CourseLeaf reports.
